Oliver Bevan gained recognition early in his career with his Op colour & Geometric Art. His success resulted in acclaimed shows in London, Zurich and Toronto, and plaudits from Ernst Gombrich of Art and Illusion (1960) fame, who wrote Bevan’s 1974 exhibition flyer. Norbert Lynton, critical guru of ‘cool’ contemporary art in the 1960s, wrote enthusiastically about Bevan’s Op Art both in Art International (June 1965) and in The Guardian (14/08/65). In 1970-71 Bevan was commissioned to produce Op Art designs for the first ten volumes of Fontana’s legendary ‘Modern Masters’ series, which saw his work widely disseminated and popularised. In the mid-1970s Bevan pursued his creative experiments in colour with highly successful Kinetic artworks, time-based sculptural installations with changing effects of coloured light creating an immersive artistic experience.
