Bewildered and disoriented in Palermo, searching for a bit of peace, we found ourselves in front of La Martorana, a 12th century orthodox church, whose interior is lavishly decorated with mosaics. The form of the church allows light to enter from all sides. The mosaics capture it, and glitter here and there. It is like being inside a piece of music: notes are sounded and fade away, rich chords are struck, coloratura accents soar above everything. I took a series of photographs looking upwards, little thinking that they might generate a new series |
