While working on the bathing paintings I found myself drawn towards water in general and fountains in particular: the one in Uzès at night, the fountains of Aix-en-Provece, of Montpellier... The idea of of starting some paintings on this theme appealed to me though there was no clear point of departure. Chance, if there is such a thing, showed me the way as usual. I had to go to Paris to deliver some paintings and had planned to see the huge Monet waterlilies in the Orangerie, but I had forgotten, not for the first time, that most Paris museums close on Tuesdays. Disappointed, I walked into the gardens of the Tuileries, photographed the fountains there then made my way towards the open sided courtyard of the Louvre. Arriving I found myself looking at the Pryamid against the light, tourists sitting on the low walls or walking between the pools. That was it! Now I could see the way ahead. Then in London I photographed Trafalgar Square, which I would never have done if I lived there. So the new series was launched.
